Cattle Unit
About the Unit
The unit comprises a module with capacity for 30 dairy cows in loose housing, equipped with self-locking head yokes and two cattle crushes, enabling individual animals to be handled safely and effectively. The animals also have access to a tree-lined, outdoor area where they can exercise in open-air conditions.
This unit hosts basic practical training in animal handling and restraint, topographic anatomy, clinical examination, obstetrics, genital ultrasound, artificial insemination, and the preclinical rotation.
Practical training on commercial farms
To acquire a comprehensive understanding of cattle production, it is essential for students to undertake practical training on commercial farms, where one can experience the day-to-day reality of livestock production. To this end, the University has an exclusive agreement with the largest dairy farm in the Valencia region, the SAT Moré Holstein farm in Bétera. With a herd of around 3,000 animals, of which 1,800 are in milk, and a team of three veterinarians on its staff, the farm hosts our students for practical training in surgery, clinical practice, nutrition, and other areas.
The University also has an agreement with calf-fattening enterprises, such as Bos Nostrum, owned by Mercadona, and with veterinary clinicians throughout Spain.
